Preserving Sight for Premature Infants in Vietnam's Mekong Delta

For young doctor Le Thi Mong Kieu from Can Tho Pediatric Hospital, providing screening and treatment for Retinopathy of Premature (ROP) is now a skill she carries out with confidence, but this wasn’t always the case. “Previously we thought [the infants] were too weak and vulnerable to do so,” explains 27-year-old Dr. Kieu.

Highlights of What We Do

Vision for our children

Almost 3 million children in Vietnam are have a visual impairment. Around 1.7 million of those have an uncorrected refractive error, meaning a simple pair of glasses would restore their vision. With the majority of these children living in rural areas we focused our efforts on the provinces of Binh Dinh, Thua Thien – Hue, Can Tho and Ca Mau.
